UPDATE: 11/2/2023

It’s a GREAT day to be a Theta Delt! Founders’ Day of Giving was a resounding success due to the participation of many committed Brothers! Beginning with roughly $35,000 in donations, we quickly skyrocketed as the day progressed. In the end, there were two Charges that rose to the top and were going head to head for who would win Founders’ Day. At the close of midnight, Rho Triton was the highest, and by late morning on November 1st, Epsilon surpassed them. Since no end time to qualifying donations was stated, it has been decided that this year’s title will be shared. So, next year, we will watch the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds rematch for the title. However, let’s not sleep on Beta (who raised over $10k last year), or Sigma Triton,  Beta Deuteron, Nu Triton, Gamma Deuteron or Nu Deuteron who had incredible performances as well with over $5k raised by each. So here are the results:

Active Charge winners:
Rho Triton- Highest Amount Raised
Rho Triton- Highest Number of Donors

Dormant Charge winners:
Epsilon- Highest Amount Raised
Nu Deuteron- Highest number of donations

In the end, no matter which Charge wins, our undergraduates and the communities we are a part of are the big winners! Congratulations to Rho Triton and Epsilon for their wins!

Fun fact: Virginia based Charges raised roughly $30k of the total for FDG. Convention in Williamsburg is sure to be an epic showing. TO THE OLD LADY!

This year, we reflect on the 176 years since our six Founders came together at Union’s West College building to forge a new adventure. Not long after that fateful night, they ensured the adventure continued when they initiated their first New Member, Francis E. Martindale.

Although the adventure is no longer new, it gets renewed every time a member is initiated during the current academic term. The moment of our initiation has the potential to change our paths. Seminal moments such as this one can shape our lives for years to come. Every October we celebrate Founders’ day by renewing in Union our Social Joys, as well as asking members to do their part in making sure the adventure continues for years to come.

Fundraising is a key component to Founders’ Day(s) of Giving.  Your donations help the Educational Foundation provide vital grants, scholarships, and leadership training to students at our host institutions. We are asking all Charges with living Alumni to participate and we will be tracking donation totals on the Charge level.  More about that shortly!

Join us on Social Media throughout the month, but especially October 31, 2023, to see posts about the PAST from our Fraternity Archives. Be PRESENT for live readings of the Preamble and stick around to ask us how we are shaping a FUTURE for Theta Delta Chi.

For those who want to go above and beyond simply making a donation, or joining us for a live virtual event,  you can help us spread the word to your Charge brothers. You can become a Fundraiser for your Charge Team and ensure your Charge is present on the leaderboards! Read on for ideas on how to share with your networks in the spirit of Founders’ Day: intellectually, morally, and socially.

We will have prizes for:

  • The highest number of donations and the highest amount of money raised for ACTIVE Charges. Each Charge will receive:
    • A Wooden trophy (designed as a replica of the member badge) AND
    • Ritual equipment, robes for general membership, or $500 off a table at the Grand Banquet during the Convention

EVOLUTION OF PROJECTS IN THETA DELTA CHI

Over the past seven years, we have built a foundation for the future generations of Theta Delts. Below are three examples of how projects came to be, their current impact, and how we are determining their next iteration.

PERSONAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COACHING

PAST: How It Came To Be

In the spring of 2023, Xi Triton (University at Albany) President Aidan Morgan reached out to the Central Fraternity Office to discuss some of the Charge’s plans for the semester. At the end of the call, Bro. Morgan asked if we could meet again in two weeks.

Grand Lodge staff agreed. Bro. Morgan was not the only member who wanted to connect regularly. This was the start of the Personal Leadership Development Coaching Calls. Within a month, a dozen Charge officers met with staff biweekly for coaching calls.

After a vision-setting meeting, the recurring agenda discussed what was going well, what needed work, and the commitments for the next two weeks. This basic framework helped support new and growing leaders in their self-identified endeavors.

The calls started as a way to support a leader who wanted to gain confidence in their direction and strategies. The outcomes were even more than anticipated. This coaching agenda is now part of the Advisor Training Manuals. Officers are connecting with more resources than before. There is increased feedback, support, accountability, and discussion of organizational and personal goals. The ability to take action and bring the values of Theta Delta Chi to fruition is a key indicator of the health of a Charge.

PRESENT: Aidan Morgan Testimonial

In my senior year of undergraduate and entering my first semester serving as President of Xi Triton I met with Brian Bertges, John Lowry, and Drew Johnson for a check-in as the semester began. We quickly made a list of goals and a vision for the charge that fall semester. I had some worries about remembering my goals and making them come to fruition and the 4 of us immediately recognized how to subdue that feeling of doubt. Every 2 weeks from September to May we had a brief mid-week call that entirely changed the trajectory of not only the Charges’ success but also my personal development. They held me accountable and true to the vision we had created and always offered a gentle guiding hand to support me in all of my endeavors. Consistency and clarity had never felt more attainable than after getting off of these Zoom calls, affording me the honor of receiving the 2023 President of the Year recognition. With the excellent guidance and support I received, I recommend this opportunity to everybody and am sure those who participate will find themselves living within the values of Theta Delta Chi more than ever before.

FUTURE: Next Steps

As we rolled out the Personal Leadership Development Coaching, we saw the immediate benefits of how our structure helps members to improve intellectually, morally, and socially. We are looking to increase the amount of undergraduates we can support through this quality mentorship and coaching. So, we are creating opportunities to train alumni on how to support leaders of their Charge utilizing our model.

NEW MEMBER HANDBOOK

PAST: HOW IT CAME TO BE

The Historical Quiz Book was adopted in 1922 under the direction of Nelson P. Mead, Pi Deuteron 1899. Its successor was the first edition of the Pledge manual, written and compiled by Norm Hackett, Gamma Deuteron 1898, in 1934-35.

The Second, Third, and Fourth Editions were also written and compiled by Norman Hackett Gamma Deuteron 1898 in the respective years of 1936, 1945, and 1952.

The Fifth Edition of The Handbook was prepared in 1962 under the direction of Daniel L. Conrad, Kappa Triton 1965 and was edited by an 18-man committee of which John H. Poupart, Zeta Deuteron 1957, was chairman.

The Sixth Edition was a modest revision of the Fifth Edition. It was prepared in 1966 by a committee consisting of Steven L. Davis, Psi Deuteron 1966, and Dwight R. Schaeffer, Xi 1966, Secretary and Treasurer of the 89th Grand Lodge, respectively, and Raymond L. Howe, Phi 1954, Executive Secretary.

Extensive revisions were made in 1971 for the Seventh Edition by Shield editor William McClung, Iota Deuteron 1966. He was also the editor and designer of the Eighth, Ninth, and Tenth Editions, published in 1977, 1980, and 1985 respectively.

Thomas J. Blackwood, Epsilon 1986, the Field Consultant in 1989 and 1990, assumed the duty of editing the Eleventh Edition in 1990. Dwight E. DeJong, Beta Deuteron 1990, the Field Consultant in 1991 and 1992, produced the Twelfth Edition in 1992. The Thirteenth Edition was compiled by reading all the Editions of the Theta Delta Chi Handbook and added to by James F. Kaucher, Beta Deuteron 1996, Abel Beach Intern in 1995.

The Handbook was revised for online use by the Central Fraternity Office in 2001 and served as the fourteenth edition. The previous edition, the Fifteenth, based on that revision, was prepared by Charge Consultant Adam McCready, Chi Deuteron 2002, and Systems Administrator Kay McNulty Davila, Psi Deuteron 2001.

The 16th edition was published in 2010. Systems Administrator McNulty Davila and Director of Expansion Eric Kelley, Sigma Triton 2004, compiled it. It hosted much organization information and history, but its use in New Member Education was limited. As the handbook stock ran low, the CFO and Grand Lodge were tasked with creating a suitable replacement.

The 17th edition is unique yet inspired by past editions. It was created to be used in New Member Education. The goal is to prepare someone for their initiation and to help their relationship with Theta Delta Chi develop. The current edition takes the words Norm “Mr. Theta Delta Chi” Hackett wrote in the second edition of the Pledge manual and surrounds them with stories and context of why they are relevant today. Executive Director Brian Bertges uses his voice and story through a series of parables to allow members to grasp better what it means to be a member of Theta Delta Chi. A Brothers recruitment and New Member Education experience are critical in setting the trajectory of their lifelong membership in this Fraternity.

The 17th edition was published in the spring of 2023. It is already receiving positive feedback from members and New Member Educators. It is the foundation for a revised new member education curriculum.

PRESENT: RAY LARBERG, UPSILON DEUTERON '27 TESTIMONIAL & HANDBOOK DOWNLOAD

“In each chapter, after a point is made, the handbook elaborates and explains the point to the reader, even telling of the author’s own personal life experiences to further illustrate and develop a deeper understanding of its content. At the end of each chapter is a summary followed by reflective questions, challenging your understanding and retention of the content. From personal experience, these reflection questions have allowed me and my other New Member brothers to converse greatly about our newly found fraternal history with Theta Delta Chi, enabling us to become more open and willing to share about ourselves. Through this, we have become better leaders and critical thinkers.”

Membership Handbook 17th Edition 2023

FUTURE: NEXT STEPS

It took us a while to grapple with the new handbook. Now, we are building off it. We are in the works of creating a new International New Member Education Program with an accompanying  New Member Workbook. By developing this newer resource, we can help Charges understand new ways of getting the most out of their undergraduate experience.
